Christmas 1944. Two soldiers gone AWOL arrive in a Budapest that is under siege. Gazsó makes contact with the resistance but Zoltán never wants to take up arms again. He just aims to survive the war and take care of his love flowering in the shadow of horrors. However, as events unfold his attitude quickly changes. Félix Máriássy’s moving work, which projects the end days of the war from the perspective of everyday people, was the first feature film to examine the tragedy of the Holocaust, thus making it a hugely significant film of Hungarian historical remembrance.
